US President Donald trump and first lady melania trump arrived in Japan on May 25 for a four-day state visit. In Japan, trump urged business leaders to invest more in the United States, saying there has never been a better time to do so.
Trump’s visit to Japan is the first by a foreign head of state since Japan entered the new era, fox news and Reuters reported.
Trump said he wants to address the U.S. -japan trade imbalance and ensure fairness and reciprocity. His first stop on the trip was a dinner with business leaders at the us ambassador’s residence in Tokyo.
“Japan has had a big advantage for many, many years, but that’s ok, maybe that’s why you like us so much,” trump said in a speech to business leaders in Tokyo. “Negotiators are working hard on the trade talks,” he added. “We’ll get a fairer deal.”
Top Japanese executives from Toyota, nissan, Honda, softbank and lotte met with trump at the U.S. ambassador’s residence in Tokyo, according to the White House.
Trump told reporters he is working to introduce “fairness and reciprocity” in a new u.s.-japan trade agreement.
Trump also said the new trade deal would “address trade imbalances” and remove existing barriers to exports to the United States.
Japan, which has a $70 billion trade surplus with the United States, imports a limited amount of American goods and USES protectionism to block competition from other countries. That’s one of the reasons trump is upset. Trump said the tariffs could be seen as a corrective measure.
Japan is hoping to use the state visit to persuade trump to waive punitive tariffs on the country. Japan is concerned that a U.S. tax on Japanese cars would have a major impact on its economy.
Japan has made ample preparations for trump’s state visit to showcase the strong relationship between the two countries. On Saturday night, the Tokyo SkyTree’s nighttime lights were changed to the red, blue and white colors of the U.S. flag to create a welcoming atmosphere.
Earlier this week, trump said visiting Japan was a great thing. “We get along very well with Japan. I get along very well with [Japan’s] prime minister.”
During his speech after arriving in Japan, trump also stressed that Japan is buying military equipment from the United States.
“We make the best equipment in the world: the best jets, the best missiles, the best rockets, the best everything,” trump said. “so Japan is placing a very large order and we applaud that.”
On Sunday, trump and Abe will play golf together and watch sumo wrestling at the national science center in the afternoon. The two heads of state will formally begin trade talks next Monday (May 27). A trade deal may be on the table, but officials on both sides have not promised to do so.
Trump and Abe will also discuss the threat from north Korea during their meeting. U.S. national security adviser John bolton said Friday that north Korea violated u.n. security council resolutions by launching a series of short-range missile tests last month.
Trump is scheduled to visit the Japanese maritime self-defense force base in yokosuka, kanagawa prefecture, next Tuesday and join Abe aboard the izumo-class helicopter frigate kaga, putting the ultimate focus on the close military ties between the two countries.
Hours before trump arrived in Tokyo on Saturday, a moderate earthquake struck eastern Japan, shaking buildings in the capital. The epicenter was south of Chiba prefecture, southeast of the capital, where trump will play golf on Sunday.
There were no tsunami warnings and no immediate reports of damage.
